Keep Sound Buttons From Clipping Your Mix
Simple loudness habits so a Sound Buttons Max clip does not blow out a voice chat, a short-form video, or a live stream.
Meme audio is often recorded from a phone speaker, a game, or a compressed video. That means peaks. If you drag the MP3 onto a timeline at 0 dB and your voice is already hot, the sting will clip. You do not need a mastering suite to avoid that. You need a habit.
Preview at the volume you will actually use
Play the button on Sound Buttons Max with your headphones at the same level you edit. If it already hurts, it will hurt more after YouTube’s limiter. Download it anyway, then turn it down in the editor before you do anything else.
A boring fader rule
Park the sting 6 to 12 dB under your voice. If the joke disappears, the clip is too quiet or the joke is the wrong clip. Do not solve “I cannot hear the meme” by slamming the fader into the red. Solve it by cutting surrounding music for half a second.
Shorts and Reels
Vertical video apps smash loudness. A sting that sounded fine in Premiere can become a square wave after upload. Leave headroom. If the platform normalizes, a clip that was already slamming will distort in a way you cannot fix later.
Voice chats
Discord and similar apps duck or compress incoming audio. A piercing alarm or scream will make everyone turn you down for the rest of the night. Use stings that are short. Stop holding the hotkey. If someone is mid-sentence, wait.
When the file itself is the problem
Some buttons are supposed to be ugly. That is the joke. Ugly does not have to mean louder than the rest of the video. Treat “ugly” as tone, not as peak level. The audience should laugh at the timing, not flinch at the meter.
If you only change one thing after reading this, change this: lower the sting first, then decide if the cut still works. Most of the time it does, and your mix stops sounding like an accident.
